Sarah Littlefield

I purchased the 2015 Equinox from Deery Brothers in West Burlington, IA. My fiancé and I liked the vehicle during our test drive, but we felt very manipulated and rushed in our decision making process. We came in to test drive a 2014 Traverse that was listed for $13,500. We made it clear to our salesman Steve Donald, that we wanted to be lower than that price, or right at that price if the deal was right with the mileage on the vehicle, year, and any problems with the vehicle. We really liked the Traverse and were told that “they” couldn’t make it work in our price range. We were told that “he”, I’m guessing the sales manager, brought the price all the way down to what the dealership had into the car, and still couldn’t make the deal work. Franticly, our salesman said that there may be a deal that they could make work; we had to go because I had to get to work. We saw the list price of $16,100 on the window of the vehicle and knew that that was not in our price range. Steve made the comment that “he” is coming way down on the price for this vehicle and that “he” doesn’t usually do this. He was really pushy and forceful that I made this deal. I have never in my life met someone as passive-aggressive as Steve Donald. I have never in my years of purchasing vehicles, which I have purchased my fair share, have ever felt so manipulated, mislead, and disrespected as I did at Deery Brothers. I felt as if I were being discriminated against due to my age, which is 22 years of age, with the way the salesman was talking to me and the way everything was misleading. I could not even get an oil change because Steve told me that it can damage a vehicle if it is changed before the oil percent is below 10%. I have never heard of such a thing before, I just wanted a fresh oil change, along with the free one I will receive in the next 6,000 miles. I did not want to have to come back in 1,000 miles just for the oil change, since I live one hour away. Steve refused to help us out on that. Steve again insisted that we were getting a good deal and did not make any mention of the price of the vehicle after I asked repeatedly. I asked and he would distract us with the car buying process and repeatedly used the phrase “you are getting a good deal.” I then went into the financing office and began to sign more paper work. I was told that the price was going to be $22,000 and some old dollars, but since we put $500 down, it was going to be $21,000 and some odd dollars. I was a little leery on the price, as I did not want to be higher than $20,000 all in with the left over from the Sonic that I traded in plus the gap insurance and the extended warranty that was mentioned. My thought process was that I was getting the equinox for the $13,500, which was the price of the Traverse, plus the $5,500 left over inequity from my previous car loan, plus the extended warranty and gap insurance, leaving me at the $21,000 in debt that was mentioned in the financing office. When I got home and looked at the financing papers we noticed that I was in fact $26,000 in debt which was not what I thought was agreed upon and was not what we wanted at all. This price was never mentioned, and this is why I feel manipulated and mislead during the whole process. When I saw that, I just wanted to opt out of everything. This deal was very misleading to say the least, and I couldn’t even get a full tank of gas. I felt like Steve was very unprofessional with his words. I mentioned that I had filled up the car the previous day and wanted at least the 12 gallons in the new vehicle. Steve said that could not happen so I made the joke that I was going to syphon the gas out of the Sonic, since they couldn’t give us a full tank, and Steve said “be my guest.” I find it very hard for me to recommend this place to someone as we feel very manipulated, blinded, and I was not treated with any respect, I have never in my life had such a bad experience purchasing anything. I am posting this review on behalf of myself, and Derric Littlefield, who purchased the vehicle.

Response from owner

Sarah, Sorry to hear you had such a poor experience. We strive to provide good service no matter what our customers' age. It is also company policy to have everything disclosed regarding pricing of the vehicle and any other products our customers purchase in writing and we require all our customers to sign a motor vehicle purchase agreement and financial contract stating all of the terms of the sale. This best practice helps make sure customers are clear on what they are purchasing and what they are paying for the vehicle and products they choose to purchase in writing. We will review the terms of your car purchase and make sure everything is in order as well as share your review with our staff so they may reflect back to your experience and possibly learn if they could have conducted anything differently. Thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback.

Save your time and money. This dealership was changing hands between owners when I was shopping and the whole staff was awful. The salespeople are friendly, but incompetent and their managers are pushy, rude and will not listen to you. I had to void a check because they "lost" the keys to my car when I attempted to get a value for my trade in. I wrote a check for a deposit and then had to void it on my phone so they could "find" my keys again. Worst car buying experience ever.

Response from owner

Alex sorry that you had bad experience car shopping. Perhaps your review was intended for another dealership. Deery Brother, Inc. has not changed ownership for over 28 years since we purchased the dealership from Arledge Auto. Please give us a call we would love to help. We would ask that you remove your review until we are allowed to show you what we can do for you. We are located right next to the Westland Mall in West Burlington. Buyer beware, deery brothers will not stand behind their warranties, they go out of their way to screw customers, very poor customer service.

Response from owner

Michael, Please give me a call at your earliest convenience. I was startled to read your review. We do not actually have any warranties that are direct from Deery Brothers we are a franchised dealer that can perform work on vehicles for the manufacturer warranties. We also offer extended service contracts from another company. If you are having a hard time getting something covered by a warranty company I would love to investigate and see if we can work with the manufacture or extended service contract company and get your problem resolved. I feel like there is a lot of communication break down with this company. I called to double check my appointment time, come to find out the lady never put me down. Also the prices vary depending on the person you talk to. However, one thing is for sure it's always over priced. It's cheaper for me to drive 2 hrs back home to have my car worked on.

Response from owner

Jessica, I left you a message earlier. I hope you return my call. As I mentioned on your voicemail the last record we had of you visiting us here at Deery Brothers was in March of 2016. If you have a more recent appointment I do not have any record of it. I did speak with my service department and Brooke does recall speaking with you last Saturday when you called in to inquire about whether your Malibu had any open recalls. Brooke stated she looked up your vehicle in General Motors system and your specific VIN does not have any open recalls at this time. She said you did express some displeasure that you would be responsible for the repairs on your vehicle as it does not have any remaining warranty or coverages from the manufacturer. Regarding the pricing of our services here at Deery Brothers of West Burlington. I am sure you will find our pricing is certainly in line with other dealerships with factory trained ASE certified technicians with state of the art of equipment and facilities. Again, please contact me back as I would welcome the opportunity to visit with you further regarding your experience in order to determine if there is an opportunity for us to improve our processes and communications with our customers. Thanks for taking to time to share your experience. Sincerely, Terry Mertens General Manager Deery Brothers, Inc. (319) 752-6000 email: tmertens@deerybrothers.com

I took my car in for an issue concerning the navigation system after waiting on my car for FIVE hours they told me they couldn't get it to start, the technician thought it was A battery in the ignition key so they replaced it and still couldn't get it to start then they said it was A brake switch which needed to be ordered so they sent me home in A rental that they provided, after waiting on my car all afternoon I had an hour drive home. they called me two days later to tell me my car was done and the bill was $675, when I got there to pick it up the actual bill was over $700 they had charged me for replacing the battery in the key that wasn't even bad, then they had the nerve the require the vehicle they loaned me be returned with A full gas tank, I must say I wouldn't recommend this dealership, the only way I will ever return there is if every other dealership on earth spontaneously combusts.

Response from owner

Carol, Sorry you did not have a good experience. It appears our staff did not communicate with you as well as we should have regarding the diagnosis of the multiple issues your Mazda had at the time you brought it in for repair. After running several test on your vehicle the Mazda master certified technician determined the USB port on your vehicle was not reading properly we were able to get the part the same day. The intermittent start issue with your vehicle was related to two issues the battery in your remote and a brake switch. The brake switch was triggering your vehicle's safety system not allowing the vehicle to start. Unfortunately after diagnosing this issue it was determined the part needed to be ordered. That was when the decision to provide you a rental vehicle at no charge was made. We had the parts company expedite the shipping to get you back in your vehicle as quickly as possible. We are sorry you do not feel the fuel in the rental vehicle was your responsibility, however, Heartland Rental Cars has the same policy as most rental car companies regarding fuel not being included in the cost of a rental (cost of the rental was paid by the dealership). Regarding the final bill, your repair bill was actually $695.07 the reason it was over $700 was the sales tax of $48.65. If you feel strongly the $14.26 for the key fob battery was unnecessary please contact our General Manger, Terry Mertens he mentioned he would welcome a call from you to discuss a refund for the cost of the battery. Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. Have a great day!

I drove 4 hours from out of state to come look at a car. I told them I had my reservations and they assured me that the car is in great shape. Upon arriving and inspecting the car the paint on the trunk was dried out and flaking off and the bumper was out of alignment. I told them this and they came down on the price a bit. When I took the car to get the body issues fixed I was told that there were more issues than what the dealer had described. On top of that, the paint job was shoddy. To get it fixed properly was going to cost way more than the amount that they came off of the price. I called Deery brothers and spoke to Tim, the used car manager and told him the ordeal. He offered no help and basically said good luck. Overall, they did a poor job of representing the car. The car inspection failed to find flaking paint and parts that aren't aligned correctly. Guys were shady and took advantage of a first time young car buyer. Will not be returning again.

Response from owner

Luke, Sorry to hear you are not happy with your purchase. It appears the dealership did make some concessions for you regarding some of the issues you found when you inspected the vehicle. Sorry to hear this mutually agreed to compromise was not to your liking after you took possession of the vehicle. We will certainly visit with our technician that performed the inspection on the vehicle you purchased, however, we may not be able to find and/or notate all blemishes an eight year old vehicle may have on it's exterior or interior. It is certainly our wish as well you would have noticed any other blemishes on the vehicle prior to you purchasing the vehicle. As it appears you would not have made the purchase. It is never our intention to hide anything from customers this is why we allow everyone to fully inspect a vehicle before they purchase a vehicle and even encourage customers to have their own mechanic or technician inspect vehicles prior to purchases. This is especially true with the purchase of an eight year old vehicle that is sold "as-is" with no warranty of any kind. We hope you reconsider your position to not return in the future. We do appreciate your business and hope you enjoy your car.

Service Department was very unorganized. Charged me an additional $ for work that I was lead to believe completed and paid for from the start. Stay away!!!

Response from owner

Jerry, Sorry to hear you did not have a great experience during your recent visit. I tried to contact you to discuss further so we can avoid a similar issue in the future, however, I do not have a good number for you. Please reach out to me when it is convenient. Very poor customer service in sales. Didn't have good prices either. Got a better price and nicer people across the street at Shottenkirk.

Response from owner

Sorry to hear you did not have a good experience. Although we are glad you did find a vehicle that fit your needs and budget. We are extremely surprised to hear you found better pricing elsewhere as we monitor the local market very closely to ensure our pricing is in line with the market and customers will very rarely find our competitors pricing is lower than ours if compared to a like vehicle with like miles. Congratulations on your new vehicle. Please feel free to contact our general manager, Terry Mertens, if you would like to share your experience with the dealership directly.

Very unorganized as far as paperwork is concerned took over a month and a half to recieve the title for my car and very pushy sales techniques.

Response from owner

Ronald sorry you had problems with your paperwork when you purchased your vehicle. We do not have record of you purchasing a vehicle here at Deery Brothers, Inc. 200 S Gear Ave, West Burlington, IA 52655. Was this purchased under a different name or perhaps you purchased from a different location. Please contact our General Manager, Terry Mertens. Terry will do his best to resolve any issues.

Drove new Nissan pickup they had.said it wouldn't work due to bucket seats in back after that .they seemed totally uninterested infinding me what I needed. I had a specific list. Also asked them twice to appraise my miata on a trade.nothing! I bought a Subaru from a dealer who found me what I asked for.

Response from owner

Lynn Sorry to hear we couldn't find you what you needed. Unfortunately Nissan does not offer the Frontier with a manual transmission with the long box 4x4. We really wish we were able to find something for you in the brands we have available here in West Burlington as we are not licensed to sell new Subaru we could not offer you one of their products. Regarding your trade value we certainly should have provided you with some book values, however, we cannot offer you an amount to trade for unless we have something to sell you that you want to own. We are glad you found something that worked for you. Please keep us in mind in the future and we will try to do a better job for you.

Austin Wright

I'm new to Iowa from Ohio and dealed with Deery Brothers and dealed with other dealers tried to charge me $3800 for a dent on my truck that cost a $1000 they low ball so bad would not recommend.

Response from owner

Austin, Sorry to hear you felt differently regarding the damage to your grandfather's truck that he wanted to trade in for a new truck. Had we received permission to have a proper estimate completed at the collision center we may have been able to give your grandfather a more accurate estimate of the cost to replace the rear quarter panel, repair the tailgate and repaint his truck. If he received an estimate to repair his truck from an iCar certified collision center for $1000 we would recommend he return to that collision center and have them complete the work and we can reevaluate his truck at that time. Regarding your grandfather's other trade with the salvage title it can be difficult to appraise a salvage titled vehicle when we have an opportunity to see and drive it. With just the pictures to base an offer on it makes a difficult task even more difficult. If your grandfather gives us an opportunity to physically see the other trade we will be able to make a proper inspection of the other trade and make him a more accurate offer. Please have your grandfather let us know when he has the damage repaired and when he can get both trades to the dealership to have proper appraisals completed. Please have your grandfather contact us if he has any questions.

This dealership is an absolute JOKE!! Jacked my dad around about buying a 2004 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. He took his Rubicon to trade a couple weeks ago and the salesman low balled him so bad on trade, he was wasting my dad's time. Dad made an offer to write out a check for the Jeep on the spot, but his offer was too low and the sales guy let him walk. He called and called, but felt like no one was putting him high enough on their priority list to take care of him. Promised time and time again that they would get back with him to let him know if the Jeep was still available or not after a few others test drove it. Never got a phone call back! This past Thursday (12/3) I called for my dad to see if the Jeep was still available. I spoke to Ivan and he told me it was being test driven at the time, that he would get back with me to let me know if it sold. Saturday (12/5) night 5:50, I had to call back myself. On Friday (12/4) my dad finally called one last time to see if it was available. He spoke to the salesman, and he told dad a friend of the owner's had test driven it on Wednesday, and he decided not to buy it! Dad told him he wanted it and that he was on his way to come pick it up. Right then. We live about an hour from Burlington. He was on the road for about 25 minutes when the dealership called and said they talked to the friend who drove it on Wednesday and now he changed his mind and decided he wanted the Jeep so they sold it to him instead. Working customer service, you learn to treat others the way you would want to be treated. And the way you make your customer feel is what sticks with him or her. This dealership made my dad feel bothersome and like he wasn't important! He has made a point to make sure he never buys anything from you guys! Ever! You wasted his time and yanked him around over a Jeep he had his heart set on!

Response from owner

Kearstin, Sorry to hear your father had a less than desirable experience. It is surprising how often it happens that two or more customers are interested in the same vehicle at the same time when we have over 600 vehicles available at our West Burlington location alone. We of course do understand that not every used vehicle is exactly alike and when we have one available that is especially unique such as the Jeep your dad was interested in purchasing. It inevitably turns out that one or more customers may be upset that they did not purchase it when they had the opportunity for whatever reason. In order to be fair to all customers we offer all of our vehicles available on a first come first serve basis. Unfortunately from the time your dad first contacted us and the time it was being driven by another customer he did not agree with the price the Jeep he missed the opportunity to purchase the vehicle in that two week period. We certainly hope your father and yourself reconsider your position as we would be happy to contact him if we trade for a similar Jeep.

Super high pressure salesman that think they know everything but rarely do. Our one requirement when looking for a car a few years back was that it not be red. I kid you not, the dude brought us 3 red cars. We walked away.

Response from owner

Matt, Sorry to hear you did not have a pleasurable experience when you were in a few years back. I hope we can do a better job for you in the future. Please don't hesitate to give me a call directly if I can be of assistance. Terry Mertens General Manager

I had ordered some accessories from Deery Brothers, for my 2014 Ford F-150. The sales lady, Cindy, was very nice and professional. However, the workers, not so professional. i have a towel on my ds seat, and it was left on the floor. The shop manager told me that he would be able to have his guy spray the bed liner smooth, and that didn't happen. Worst of all, i've had my brand new truck for 3 weeks, and they were the one's to put the first scratch in it. They were lazy in trying to fix it up for me. It was pretty deep, and they didn't even buff on it like the kid say they did. They put touch-up paint on it and that's it. There was another mark too, and it was still there, when in fact, i could have buffed it out my self ( have being a body shop painter in the past). Ill have to take care of it myself when i get back home. They didn't even wash it up for me. I was told that their car wash was down. Funny, cause i seen a kid washing a car. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THESE GUYS TO ANYONE. build/paint me a dog house.
